get to know me

Thanks for showing interest in my portfolio! My name is Isabella and I would love to know yours, so please reach out, if you’d like. Aside from graphic design, I love all things art and have been described as an artist by family and friends since I could hold a crayon. As a toddler, my parents had to pull me out of Montessori pre-school because I refused to leave the arts & crafts corner. I truly don’t believe I’ve changed much since then, at least in terms of interests — and the baby face. Through elementary to sixth grade I was taking various art classes at KCAD in downtown GR every single weekend. I did lots of drawing classes, a few painting classes, and a couple of pottery ones. I even took a manga drawing class because I loved the movie “Big Hero 6” when it came out and I wanted to learn how to draw like that. I found that no matter which class I took, I was excelling in every one. Maybe it was because it was at a college, but I took these classes very seriously (though, mind you, there were no grades or anything. It was just for kids to learn basic art techniques and to have fun while doing so). I was in it for the love of the game. At Rockford, we had a really great art program as well, so I can confidently say that I’ve always been blessed with the abundance of access to the arts.

Going to art school every weekend and being surrounded by all of the art within the city of GR is definitely what inspired me to stay on this creative path. I was quite a shy kid, but I spent my teenage years working at various restaurants around the city, where I developed a mastery of people skills. In high school, I panicked at the thought of choosing a solid career path because I was deathly afraid of being stuck in a non-creative field. My dad was a web designer for many years, so he convinced me to take a graphic design class my senior year. I fell in love with the clean lines as well as the major marketing aspect. I knew instantly that this is what I wanted to do. Absolutely nothing is more thrilling to me than selling a product or an idea through successful design. Without my teachers, professors, and other mentors over the last several years, I truly don’t believe I’d be as solidified and confident in my design abilities and endeavors. In my four years at GVSU, I’ve gained a magnitude of knowledge about the principles of graphic design and will continue to learn and grow as a designer far beyond my graduation. I am beyond excited to jump into my vocation after graduating, and I thank you immensely for possibly being apart of that journey!
